about

Born (1998) and raised in the CA Bay Area, Aliza Katzman is a nonbinary artist whose queer identity and mixed heritage (Ashkenazi Jewish, Korean, and Irish) influences their interest in social cohesion, taxonomy, and storytelling. They received a BA in Political Science from UC Berkeley and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Pratt Institute. Their work has been shown in cities across the United States and internationally. Previously, Aliza has been an Artist in Residence at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley CA, and at the New York Academy of Art in New York City.

They are interested in (un)familiarity, ambiguity, and the absurd. The stories we construct about our world can create both understanding and confinement - similarly, spaces where boundaries are transgressed can become liberating or disorienting; intimate or violent. Envisioning such fantastical spaces is a drawn-out meditation on the ways we reconcile our selves to our surroundings, and how the intersection of boundaries creates entirely new worlds.

Their current work investigates inherited narratives, personal mythologies, and parallels between psychosocial and ecological landscapes.
